Why Do I Want to be Rich?

by Brandon on November 2, 2009

Who doesn’t want to be rich?  Pretty much everyone wouldn’t mind having a few million extra in the bank and I’m definitely no exception to that rule.  However, I fee like a lot of people don’t really understand what a high net worth could do for their lives–both professionally and personally.

Professionally

At some point I’d like to be completely unreliant on an employer for a paycheck.  No matter how cherry of a job situation anyone ever has, it’s still just a job.  It’s my personal belief that a job is like renting, you may be able to sustain your lifestyle nicely but you’re not really building any meaningful, long-term equity.  On the flip side, business owners, even those that do the same exact thing as you do in your job, are building an asset that someday could be sold and generate significant wealth.

I have yet to have any significant professional success but I’m a perpetual student of business.  In my opinion, self-education is the key to success so I constantly grow in my knowledge of both entrepreneurship and my career field (online marketing).  Down the road I fully plan on being self-employed and spending my time starting new ventures and investing in others.

Personally

I don’t aspire to buying Ferraris, Rolexes, and Yachts.  But, hey, if that kind of dough came my way I’m sure I’d have fun indulging.  In reality, my financial goals hinge on the idea that time = money.

Financial freedom affords a person an extreme freedom to lead a well-rounded, fulfilling life.  Imagine setting your own work hours and taking (nearly) as much vacation/fun time as you desire to spend with your family.  It’s not about laziness and it’s not about overindulgence.  I want to be the only master of my time with no boss to answer to (except maybe my future wife :-) ).

I realize this isn’t earth shattering commentary but why do you want to be rich?  Same reasons?  Different reasons?  Chime in below in the comments section!
